Flood of the Portneuf River, mid-February, 1962. Aerial view looks south
at the north end of Pocatello. The flood was caused by heavy rain on snow-covered
and frozen ground in the Gem Valley area. It led to the construction of
a concrete channel through downtown Pocatello. The straight road on the
right is Gathe Drive, with the West Bench (Valleyview Dr. and Highland Blvd.)
behind. The West Pocatello subdivision (between Oakwood Dr. and Foothill
Blvd.) is in the distance across the flooded ground near the river. In the
middle center is where Main and Arthur come together. In the foreground,
on the northeast side of the river are the stockyards. Above them and closer
to the river is the north end of the Pacific Fruit Express facility, and
above that, on the far side of the railroad is a large metal building of
Gate City Steel. The curving road immediately left of the river and west
of the track is the original route of U.S. Highway 30. The large white building
with the peaked roof, surrounded by flood waters is the old EL Rio Club,
which was a bar and gambling hall at a time when neither activity was legal.
