Stage
Robbery
On July 13,
1856, over $60,000 in gold dust was stolen and three men were killed in
a robbery of the Ben Holladay Overland Stage southeast of Inkom. The robbery
probably took place north of Lower Rock Creek, near where Green Canyon joins
the Portneuf River. The robbers were never caught, but Robbers Roost Canyon
is named for them. The filings for possession of land for stations along
the Holladay stage line had been filed on, only a few weeks before, in late
June. |
