You were recently hired as the naturalist for the Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area (SRBOPNCA) and the Bruneau Resource Area (BRA), which are adjacent to each other.  A biology class from McCammon, Idaho has been on a field trip in the SRBOPNCA and the BRA.  While out traveling they have captured the following three organisms and brought them to you.  They want to know what species these are, what characteristics you used to identify them, and what they eat (inquisitive group aren't they?).
Species 1:
When they arrived, a student was holding this animal.  It has smooth scales and vertical pupils.  What is it?  What characteristics did you use to identify it?
Species 2:
Another student was holding this animal.  What is it?  What characteristics were helpful in identifying it?
Species 3:  Finally, they had a small jar of sand, inside of which was this animal.  What is it? (hint:  The caterpillars of this species will feed on wild buckwheats including alpine and mountain sorral.  Adults drink flower nectar).
