Overview:
Bruneau Sand Dunes contains the largest single-structured sand dune in North America. Geologists believe the dunes started forming 15,000 years ago. A field trip to this area would really be ideal for students to experience this singular sand dune formation. The questions below could be used as an activity after getting back from a field trip for a review or even a precursor before going on a trip. Without a field trip, this activity will still be useful for learning about the Bruneau Sand Dunes. It can be done as a class activity or as a homework assignment.

Objectives:
1. Students will learn how to use the Digital Atlas of Idaho.
2. Students will understand how a sand dune is formed.
3. Students will become knowledgeable about Bruneau Sand Dunes.

Procedure:
1. Use the Digital Atlas of Idaho. To get there: Click on Atlas Home, Geology, Parks and Monuments, Bruneau Sand Dunes then on Start Park Module. Encourage your students to read through the material and observe the pictures then answer the following questions. For a printable pdf copy of the sample handout you can give your students, click below.

Handout Sample:
Bruneau Sand Dunes contains the largest single-structured sand dune in North America. Geologists believe the dunes started forming 15,000 years ago. By doing this exercise, you will become much more familiar with the geology and ecology of this area. Use your knowledge to answer the following questions completely and accurately:

1. How does the formation of a wind shadow help the formation of sand dunes?
2. Would you expect the steep side of a sand dune slope to be facing the wind or away from the wind?
3. What three things were required in order for the Bruneau Sand Dunes to form?
